On Friday, 15 June 2018 AmaNdebele traditional leadership received audience from SABC board and executive. The meeting was an exertion towards resolving a number of issues raised by this important stakeholder. Board Chairperson Bongumusa Makhathini, Acting GCEO Nomsa Philiso and Hosea Jiyane Corporate Affairs Acting GE made efforts and gave the group their best attention at a meeting which took almost the entire day. This meeting comes after the leadership of the King’s Delegation and AmaNdebele Concerned Group met with the SABC earlier this year at the Cluster Office, eMthambothini.

In attendance was Ikosi SoBongane leading the entire delegation and representing Ingwenyama Mabhoko, members of other royal councils and AmaNdebele Movement. At the core of the group’s uncomfortable relationship with the SABC sits the operational issues of iKwekwezi FM including lack of Ndebele television content. The group is aggrieved and feels that the SABC is disrespectful towards AmaNdebele especially since they have been lodging their complaints to no visible results. “A simple thing like children’s content such as Takalani Sesame in IsiNdebele is not available on SABC. iKwekwezi FM is ran by non-Ndebele speaking people who knows nothing about our culture and beliefs, from Marketing; Sport; Current Affairs as well as Station Manager”, said one member in attendance.

Acting GCEO, Nomsa Philiso challenged and pleaded with the group to submit television content to the SABC. “It can be dramas, series or movies, please sent to the SABC and give us details of staff members you submit to so that we can assist to follow up the process. We can then account to your needs”, said Philiso. She further suggested that the AmaNdebele stakeholder group should invite the Portfolio Committee on Communication and ICASA to unpack some of the things as well as the funding model of the SABC.

The SABC Board Chairperson assured AmaNdebele traditional leaders that they remain their important stakeholder and that their issues as raised receive utmost attention. “That is why we saw it fit to attend to this meeting so that we arrive at a favorable conclusion in consultation with you. This meeting allows us to understand deeper issues on the ground to enable us to remain your preferred public broadcaster”, he said.
