SABC Gauteng Provincial office celebrates Africa Day with the Russian Embassy

SABC Gauteng Provincial office celebrated Africa Day with the Russian Embassy today, 25 May 2018. Colleagues from the two organizations came together in celebrating Africa’s independence, freedom and liberation strife. The day is celebrated annually to commemorate the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on 25 May 1963. The OAU was later renamed the African Union.

The event, which was characterized by a meet and greet between the two organizations saw colleagues in their colourful African traditional attires, in jubilation officially commemorating the day. It was a song and dance affair where traditional African cuisine was served. Magwinya, dombolo, atchar, and polony made the feast whilst the Russians brought Vodka & pancakes.

The environment created an adorable opportunity to officially launch the upcoming Football Fridays planned between Ikwekwezi FM & the Russian Embassy. Colleagues were officially engaged on the plans moving forward to create hype around the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup. The first Football Friday will be held in Hatfield at a local playground where all BRICS countries will be participating. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018.

The SABC will provide audiences with a world-class broadcast experience of the greatest football spectacle in the world and celebrate the best of what the world’s footballers have to offer. 32 nations will compete to be crowned the greatest in the world and the SABC will cover the best 44 of the 64 matches live across the SABC radio stations, SABC 1 and its digital platforms.
