“Housing is absolutely essential to human flourishing. Without stable shelter, it all falls apart.” – Matthew Desmond.

In line with Mandela Day, Ikwekwezi FM saw it fit to join forces with Habitat for Humanity to build two houses in Orange Farm in honour of Madiba. The SABC CSI office facilitated the partnership that saw the station physically taking part in the construction of the houses that were unveiled on the 18th of July 2025. Presenters and supporting staff rolled up their sleeves, put on their hard hats and laid brick after brick in an effort to restore the dignity of the two families.

The presentation of the houses happened on Mandela day. It was attended by various stakeholders that participated in the project. Notably, Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements Ms. Tasneem Motara, the board chairperson for Habitat for Humanity Mr. Siphiwe Ngwenya as well as representatives from Sanlam and Hankel who were donors of the building project. Other SABC brands that supported the project are Channel Africa and 5FM.

“SABC has a responsibility to do more than just broadcasting, we also strive to ensure that wherever we go we live an impact, an impact that aims to restore our people’s dignity. We know what Madiba fought for, we know what he stood for and for us is to make sure his legacy lives on.” Said Nkosinathi Ntuli, Mpumalanga Combo Business Manager.
